Off the Chart

A living measurement of body proportion to mark out a pattern of symmetrical squares and circles. Going around the grid, a corporeal notation of overlapping circles is drawn to reveal repetitive geometrical shapes. Using the human form as the main subject, stripping the performance of decorative elements, the live drawing uses the body to chart out geometric patterns onto the ground, leaning into the corporeality of each chalk mark. Each move, an action line unfurling rings of circles.

Based on mathematical configurations from the canon of body proportions, using quarters, halves and whole, the pieces, parts and segments of the human form are made bare. Working with her body, Pat calculates and notates the length of her feet to the knee, torso, head, arms and hands in relation to the parameter of the space. In the measurement of self, in the charting of movement and drawing of lines, the body functions as a ruler always in absolute precision in the placing, aligning and marking of each point, line and angle.

OFF THE CHART was first presented at Dance Nucleus Vector #1 and an iteration was performed in response to Antony Gomley’s Horizon Field at National Gallery Singapore.
